Walk down any beauty aisle and read the words on the packaging.

Conceal.

Blur.

Correct.

Almost every promise is about making something disappear. Lines, spots, texture, redness, the face you actually woke up with. And underneath all of it is a quieter message most of us absorbed without ever agreeing to it.

There is something wrong with you, and this bottle will hide it.

I see that pattern in more than the beauty aisle. There is a lot of hiding in how many women shop. Hiding their shape, hiding their skin, buying the Pinterest version of themselves one product at a time.

I want to be careful here, because I don't have a problem with anything that makes a woman feel beautiful. The question is where it's coming from. There is a difference between enhancing something you love and covering something you're ashamed of. One takes care of you over time. The other just asks you to keep buying.

What we build around instead

At the core of Five Oaks Farm is health. Real nutrition, and a habit of conserving what matters. Whether it's your time, whether it's waste, whether it's just not consuming the junk.

That applies to everything we make, and skincare is no exception. If it goes on your skin every day, it should be feeding your skin, not masking it.

So our skincare shelf is short on purpose. Short ingredient lists. Ingredients chosen for function, not filler. Beeswax and honey from our own farm. And every product on it is one I use myself.

The one I'd keep if I could only keep one

If you take one thing from this post, let it be the Frankincense Tallow Balm.

It's the only moisturizer I've used on my face for more than seven years. It doesn't cover anything. It doesn't promise to erase anything. It gives your skin what it needs to hold on to moisture and take care of itself, with six ingredients you can read in one breath:

Grass-fed tallow, olive oil, calendula oil, frankincense essential oil, lavender essential oil, lemongrass essential oil.

Tallow's fatty acids closely resemble the oils your own skin produces, and it carries vitamins A, D, E and K. That's the difference between a product that sits on your face and one that works with it. (If you want the full breakdown, read Why We Put Tallow on Our Skin.)

A face routine with three steps

Everything else in our face routine is built around the balm.

  1. Wash with the Charcoal & Tallow Face Bar. Tallow, water, sodium hydroxide (lye, which is how every true soap is made), castor oil and activated charcoal. Nothing else.

  2. Nourish with a thin layer of Frankincense Tallow Balm on clean skin.

  3. Protect your lips with our Tallow & Beeswax Lip Balm, made with beeswax from our own hives.

That's the whole routine. No serums stacked six deep. It fits into a morning in a house with five kids, which is the only kind of routine I'm interested in.

All three come together in the Nourish and Flourish Face Set.

About the tint

Our Tinted Lip Balm is the one skincare product we make that adds color, so it's fair to ask whether it breaks the rule.

The answer is in how it's made and how it wears. It starts with the same base as our regular lip balm, tallow, jojoba oil and local beeswax, with mineral pigments for a soft tint. Most lip balms are made to look good. Ours are made to work.

And the color is built to look like you, not like makeup.

  • Rosy Petal is a muted rose that enhances your natural lip tone without reading "made up."

  • Harvest Blush is a warm terracotta that adds warmth and definition.

  • Farmstead Berry gives a healthy flush, like you've been outside, not like you're wearing lipstick.

That's enhancement. Your lips, a little more like themselves.

The part no product can do

No jar will make you like your face. Not ours, not anyone's. That part is yours to work on.

What a good product can do is take care of your skin while you do, instead of teaching you to hide it.

Nourish the skin you have. It has been showing up for you every single day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes skincare "nourishing"? Nourishing skincare is built to support your skin's own moisture and barrier, not to cover it. We look for short ingredient lists where every ingredient has a job, like grass-fed tallow, beeswax and plant oils.

What's in the Nourish and Flourish Face Set? The Frankincense Tallow Balm, the Charcoal & Tallow Face Bar, and a Lip Balm.

Is tinted lip balm makeup? Ours is a lip balm first. It's made with tallow, jojoba oil and local beeswax, with mineral pigments for a sheer, buildable tint.

Which tinted lip balm shade should I choose? For subtle and everyday, choose Rosy Petal. For warmth and definition, choose Harvest Blush. For fresh color and glow, choose Farmstead Berry.
