A Natural Routine for Dry Winter Skin

It happens the same way every year.

The mornings get cooler. The heat kicks on. And a couple of weeks later your knuckles are cracking, your lips are splitting, and your shins itch under your jeans.

Most of us treat it like a surprise. It isn't. It's three predictable things happening at once.

  • Cold air holds less moisture than warm air.

  • Indoor heat dries the air inside your house even further.

  • Hot showers feel wonderful in January and strip the natural oils your skin is trying to keep.

Put those together and your skin loses water faster than it can replace it.

The answer isn't one miracle product. It's a few small habits, done every day, that add up. Stop stripping it. Seal it in. Protect what's exposed.

Step 1: Stop stripping it

Turn the water down from hot to warm. It's the least exciting advice in this post and one of the most useful.

Then look at what you're washing with. We switched our family to handmade bar soap years ago and never went back. Most of our bars are made with honey and beeswax produced right here on our farm, along with olive oil, shea butter and castor oil. Honey is a natural humectant, which means it draws moisture from the air into your skin. Beeswax helps lock it in without clogging pores.

Two small tools make bar soap easier to live with:

  • A Soap Sack gives you the exfoliation of a loofah without the plastic, and lets you hang your bar so it dries between uses.

  • A Soap Dish with an angled bottom drains water straight back into the sink, so your bar isn't sitting in a puddle.

Step 2: Seal it in

The best time to moisturize is right after you get out of the shower, while your skin is still a little damp. You're locking in water that's already there.

For your face, this is where the Frankincense Tallow Balm earns its spot. It's the only moisturizer I've used on my face for more than three years, and winter is when you'll feel the difference most. Grass-fed tallow is rich in fatty acids that closely resemble your skin's own oils, which is exactly what dry, tight winter skin is missing. A thin layer on clean skin is all it takes.

For the rest of you, you have two good options.

  • The Tallow Body Balm is made for the whole body. Tallow, local beeswax, shea butter, jojoba oil, and lemon and lemongrass essential oils. The beeswax adds a protective layer against wind and cold.

  • The Lotion Bar is made with organic beeswax, olive oil, shea butter and mango butter. Hold it in your hand, let your body heat soften it, and rub it right onto your skin. It comes in Oat Milk & Honey, Lavender, Lemon Breeze and Unscented.

Step 3: Protect what's exposed

Your face, your lips and your hands take the worst of winter because they're the parts you never cover.

  • Face: Frankincense Tallow Balm in the morning, and again at night if your skin is feeling it.

  • Lips: Keep a Lip Balm in every coat pocket. The beeswax comes from our own hives. Choose the Tallow & Beeswax version for the most staying power, or the Beeswax version if you'd rather skip tallow.

  • Hands: A 2 oz Lotion Bar fits in your bag, your car or on the windowsill by the kitchen sink, which is where it will get used the most.

And for the dry patch that won't stop itching, our Itch Stick is made with tallow, jojoba oil, shea butter, beeswax and calendula, and it's small enough to live in your pocket.

If you're shopping for someone else

Winter is gift season, and dry skin is one of the few problems almost everyone on your list has.

The Tallow & Tranquility Set puts this whole routine in one box: the Tallow Balm, a Soap Body Bar, a Face Bar, a Lip Balm and a Beeswax Lotion Bar.

The takeaway

Winter skin isn't a mystery, and it doesn't need a cabinet full of products.

Stop stripping it. Seal it in. Protect what's exposed.

Do it every day, and let it add up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does skin get so dry in winter? Cold air holds less moisture, indoor heating dries the air further, and hot showers strip your skin's natural oils. Together, your skin loses water faster than it can replace it.

What's the best natural moisturizer for dry winter skin? For the face, we use our Frankincense Tallow Balm. Tallow's fatty acids closely resemble the skin's own oils. For the body, our Tallow Body Balm and Beeswax Lotion Bar both work well.

When should I moisturize in winter? Right after a shower or bath, while your skin is still slightly damp, so you lock in the water that's already there.

What's the difference between a lotion bar and a body balm? The Lotion Bar is a solid bar of beeswax, olive oil, shea butter and mango butter that softens with your body heat and travels easily. The Tallow Body Balm is tallow-based with beeswax, shea butter and jojoba oil for richer, whole-body moisture.
